What Feelings Are and Why They Matter
About Feelings
Have you ever asked yourself, “Why do I feel this way?” or “Why is that such a big deal to me where it shouldn’t be?”
Yes, I have. That’s why I want to understand my own feelings and also learn more about people’s feelings in general. After spending time reading through various sources of information, I’ve come to the conclusion that before you get to know the feelings, there is one thing that you need to get to know first which is ‘emotions’.What Are Emotions?
Emotions are our body’s automatic responses to what’s happening right now. They rise quickly, feel intense, and fade after a short while. Psychologists generally recognize six basic emotions, each with its own expression:
- Happiness – smiling, laughing, speaking with warmth and energy
- Sadness – tears, quietness, or a desire to withdraw and rest
- Fear – a racing heart, tense body, or the urge to fight or run
- Disgust – a wrinkled nose, nausea, or the need to push something away
- Anger – clenched jaw, raised voice, or strong, reactive movements
- Surprise – widened eyes, a sudden gasp, or quick, startled motion
We also have secondary emotions like frustration, pride, envy, and jealousy. For example, “I’m frustrated that I’m angry at little things.”
Emotions protect us from danger, guide our actions and decisions, and connect us to one another. In short, they’re essential for survival and connection.
Now, what are feelings then?
What Are Feelings?
Feelings are the mind’s interpretation of what’s happening inside and around us. They are shaped by a combination of emotions and our past experiences, beliefs, and thoughts. That’s why people who are experiencing the same situation can have different feelings – and why feelings can be so complex.
A simple example of two colleagues who learn that their company is cutting budgets and laying off staff. Both are surprised when they first hear the news. One may feel insecure and anxious because his family’s financial situation depends on his income. The other may feel unrecognized and devalued after all the work he has contributed to the company.
Feelings help us understand our emotions and what they mean to us.
Now I’m wondering if our feelings can change..
Can Feeling Change?
Yes — feelings can change.
When our thoughts or perspective change, our feelings often follow. What starts as hurt can turn into understanding, and fear can ease into calm once we know more. As time passes or our body relaxes, feelings can soften or take on new meaning.
Why Feelings Matter
Our feelings are built on our own experiences and perspectives. They shape how we see ourselves and how we connect with others. They play a critical role in our lives — and they deserve to be cared for with attention and understanding.
